Article of the Week #14

week of November 22-26 (Thanksgiving week)

Here is the article for this week. This is a bit longer than they have been lately, but you can do it! Read the whole thing, think about it's connection to what we are reading. This article is specifically about a painting by Norman Rockwell, a very famous painting. Think about how it connects to To Kill a Mockingbird. It is obvious, and at the same time it's not. The connection is in ideas, not in characters or events.

The article, "The Problem We All Live With" The Truth About Rockwell's Painting, was written by Ken Laird Studios and was found on the diigo website. This article is about the Norman Rockwell paintings of a little girl, name Ruby Bridges, walking into a PUBLIC school back in the 1960's. This painting is related to, "To Kill a Mockingbird," because racism is the key component in both subjects. This picture doesn't just represent a little black girl, but it represents the horrors and awful things human beingings would do to one another. The idea of racisem comes up in both the paitings and in TKAM. The main idea of this article was to show people what actually went on back in the day. In the 1960's, racisim was a major part of living. People thought that colored people were trash, and just dirt that you walk on. They didn't think that the "colors" were worthy enough to be in the same school as the "whites." To me, I think all people are the same, no matter what your appearence is and no matter where you come from. No one should ever judge someone by their appearnence or their backround. AS I read this article, the first thing I wanted to know, was what did these pictures actually look like? When the writer said he felt sorry for the little girl, I wanted to know what she was doing to make it seem like she needed pitty. After I looked through the pictures, I started to feel sorry for her myself. She was just so little and petite, how could anyone want to call her NASTY names, and throw objects at her? I wish I could go back to that time, and explain to people, that in the future, we are treated to the same, so why waste your breathe? Just get over the fact that African Americans look different than koreans, whites and Mexican. Not one person looks the same as anyone else, not even twins.(:

This article is about a man who took interest a book that was written about a little black girl and her mother and how whites and blacks did not get along. This relates to the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" because this took place when blacks were treated like slaves and how whites did not trust blacks.

"The Problem We All Live With - The Truth About Rockwell's Painting" is an article posted on diigo.com by Ken Laird Studios. It is about one of Norman Rockwell's paintings and how it relates to racism in the 50's and 60's. In the painting it has a black girl being escorted by some men with suits, and if you look closely at the wall, a splat from a thrown tomato. It relates to the 50's and 60's when colored students were going to white schools. Some people were furious about it and when students were being escorted, people would throw insults and tomatoes (just like in the painting itself. I thought it was a terrible thing, and I'm glad we no longer have Jim Crow laws to separate blacks and whites.

“The Problem We All Live With" - The Truth Rockwell's Painting About” by Ken Laird Studios is about a very important painting of an African American girl and racism. This written to any people who have seen this art piece and want to know more about it. When you look at this picture you should stop and think of what is wrong. “A painting like this depicting this subject matter, done by somebody who is embraced by the most conservative elements in our country would make these people stop and think that maybe there is a problem. And the problem is racism. Purely and simply.”-Murray Tinkelman, Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee, Society of Illustrators. The author wanted to point that Rockwell wanted to show how terribly black people were treated. My reaction to this article is that if you do look at this picture, you do see the things we have done that are wrong to black people.

The title of this article is "The Problem We All Live With." It was published on a website called diigo.com, by a studio named Ken Laird. The date it was published is unknown. The purpose of this article is to let people know how bad racism was. The intended audience is to whom it may concern. It is about a picture of a little girl that had to be walked into her school by bodyguards for her protection. My reaction to this is there is something wrong when a little girl has to have bodyguards just to get her to school safely.

The article "The Problem We All Live With - The Truth About Rockwell's Painting" was written by Ken Laird. "The Problem We All Live With" is a painting done by Norman Perceval Rockwell in 1963. The painting is of a little African American girl in a starched dress that is getting tomatoes thrown at her. The article describes how the painting is "..arguably the single most important image ever done of an African-American in illustration history.." The idea of the painting is that racism was huge problem in that time period (1960s). It was written for adults to understand that the painting was created to make people stop and think about this problem. I think that this is a very interesting painting.

The title of this story is, "The Problem We All Live With". It was origanaly published on diigo.com & the writer was Ken Laid. There was no date. The purpose of this article was to send a message out about racism , but in a different matter . It is related to "TKAM" in a lot of ways such as there racism in Alabama. The intended audience was for everyone this generation and so on to tell about how far we came along , but yet there still are people that are racist. The main purpose was to tell everyone about this painting , is not just a painting it has a story behind. A story that we should listen to. Everyone isnt the same, we breathe the same air & do the same things , just becos your black white filipino mexican or any race doesnt mean your below anyone. My reactions on this whole thing was shocked cos as i saw these picture of this lil girl walking with bodygaurds and when i read the article i got the picture

"The Problem We All Live With" is an article published on diigo.com by Norman Perceval Rockwell. This article was about racism. It connects to the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" because they both took place during a time period when racism was still happening. The intended audience was for anyone. Back then I know that people had a differnt image on life. I feel terrible for that little girl because people didn't like the color of her skin, so they threw tomatos at her because of it! No one should be treated like that, it's just right!

"The Problem We All Live With" - The Truth About Rockwells painting was written by Ken Laird Studios on diigo.com.This article was about a painting by Norman Rockwell. This painting is of a little African American girl surrounded by tall white males. This painting is related to the book "To Kill A Mocking Bird" because it shows racial issues and is the main point of the novel as it is also the main point of the painting. Some people responses to the painting was that it was about segregation of schools. How the little african american girl had to be escorted into school because there were angry people outside yelling at her and calling her names just because the color of her skin.I feel bad for her.How can a grown person yell at a child?Especially a little girl!Thats horrible.Just because she is a different color than you doesnt mean she doesnt have feelings.I mean I can kinda understand the name calling out of frustration and anger but to throw things? At a poor little girl I mean I would feel really bad.To say something is understandable sometimes but throwing things is practically crossing the line.It is sad to say that our nation has such hate to do that to another person and we should be embarssed about our past.

It connects to the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", by Harper Lee because they both took place during the time period when racism was going on. The intended audience is everyone. My feeling towards this is anger because it's sad how they threw tomatoes at the little girl because the color of her skin. What gets me more angry is that this is still kinda going on , that not a lot of people are being treated equally. But it's not worse like it used to be back then.
