Read the following passage from To Kill a Mockingbird. Explain the significance of the quotation in a comment.

In your own words, explain what Atticus is telling Scout. What does Atticus mean by this? How does it affect Scout? What do you think about what he tells? Do you agree/disagree? etc.

"Atticus stood up and walked to the end of the porch. When he completed his examination of the wisteria vine he strolled back to me.

'First of all,' he said, 'if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--'

'Sir?'

'--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.'" (Lee 29-30).

  1. I think Atticus is trying to tell Scout that u dont judge someones actions until u are in the same situation as them or you've experienced something similiar. I agree with Atticus's statement, because its true you dont understand something unless you've actually been through it.

What Atticus means by this is that you shouldnt judge a book by its cover . It affects Scouts by making him understand a little better about other people, not just think that everyones the same as her. I think he makes a great point i agree with him beacause everyones different and nobody can be the same as you,(yourself), its good to see other people perspective intead of your own & seee life in there way too and how they are. Beacause everyones life is different and you shouldnt jugde just cause its a lil different !

  3. It helps you understand why Atticus and Jem were being nice to the kid, and why they got mad at Scout when she made that comment. Atticus is telling Scout that she should think about how the other person thinks/feels about things before she says something to them. It's like the saying, " Don't judge people until you walk in their shoes. ". Scout doesn't quite understand it at first, but then she gets it. I think that it is very true, and it is good advice to her. I completely agree with his statement. It is good to teach children these things when they're young, so they don't make mistakes like that when they get older, and when they can get in much more trouble.

  4. Atticus is telling scout that you always have to see things from the other persons point of view. That maybe scout needs to be more open minded when theres a conflict between people and look at both sides of the stories. It effects scout to kind of be more of an adult than she already is. I feel about what he tells that it is kind of true, because you really do need to always look at both sides of the stories before you judge. I would have to agree with Atticus, because it is true that you always have to look at both sides of the story. I think Mrs. Coats chose this passage from the story because it teaches a lesson to everybody. The passage is also a univerasal theme.

Attics trying to tell scout to not be a bully, because she doesnt know what they are going through. She was inconciderate of other peoples feelings. The trick he was talking about was consideration and actually thinking of what someone else is going through. Scout didn't understand the meaning because she isn't all that understanding about judgement. She might learn the lesson soon or like most lessons in life will take some time.Atticus gave scout a full life lesson in only a short few sentences.

  6. I think this passage is important, because it's true that u cant understand a person until ur in his situation, or if you've had a past experience similiar. Atticus is trying to tell Scout that you'll understand someone if you were to see it in his point of view. He also explains that if she follows this then she'll get along with people more.

Atticus is saying that Scout shouldn't judge the other kids with out getting to know them and seeing their life from their point of view. I think that she doesn't understand at first until he says "Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." I think that he is right that you have to see the other persons life from the same prospective that they do. If you don't then you might not understand them. Him saying this to her will probably help her not judge people before she knows them

But like he says you can only know someone fully if you jump in there body and walk around with it.

I think what Atticus is trying to say is listen to what people are trying to say before you judge them. I thinnk this afects Scout by making her think of what Atticus is saying. what I think atticus tells is that to under stand someones life you have to walk in there shoes. I agee with Atticus because to understand what someone is trying to say you do have to listen what there trying to say. I also agree because to understands someones life you have to experince it before you judge it. What Atticus says is true.

  11. Atticus is telling Scout that until she knows how other people view things she will never completely understand the person and how to get along with them well. I think Atticus ment that Scout should be more open-minded to people and things around her. I think this makes Scout a little bit more mature about problems that are bigger than herself. I think what Atticus tells her was nice and the way he put it was perfectly understandable. I agree with what he said to Scout 100%.

Atticus is telling Scout to not judge people about what they do until she has seen it from their standing point. It affects Scout because it gives her a new perspective about people. What I think about what Atticus said is that he has a good idea of people and how they are. I agree with Atticus because I think the same thing about people. I think you chose this article because it can apply to everybodys life at sometime in their life.

  14. atticus means basicaly that dont to judge a book by its cover. It tells me that Scout dosent know whtas around her surrondings. i agree with what atticus says because he right you cant juge someone by what kind of family they have, how they talk etc you have to be in there shoes before you judge that person. This dosent effect scout i think this because she dosent change after atticus tell her this she still a little bit stuborn also that she still dosent understand that not to judge a person.

  17. Atticus was explaining to Scout what a personal view is. Atticus uses the expression "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." in other words he was telling her not to judge anybody until they know them and what they go through on a daily basis. Also that if she learns to be more acceptent that people would get along with her.

Basically,Atticus is telling Scout to not judge a book by its cover. He's trying to explain that what she sees and thinks isn't what other people see or think. She can't really know what something feels like or affect her life until she's experienced herself.Another moral that Attticus is trying to get across Scout is to not instantly jumping into a conclusions because she is more likely to make a big mistake. Unfortunatly Atticus' words don't sink in completely. She has an idea of what she should do but it doesn't affect her.I slightly disagree with Atticus because Scout is only about 6 or 7 and normally little kids are stubborn and once they scratch a little bit of the surface they think they know everything. If Atticus would've waited maybe a year or 2 I really think his words would have had a stronger impression.

Atticus was telling Scout not to judge people unless you can empathize.
Atticus wants Scout to think about why someone does somthing be for she juges them.
It affects Scout becase it changes the way she thinks about someone. I think the the analogy he used was a good way to explane not to judge people to Scout.
I agree with the lesson that Atticus taught Scout becase if people juged each other everyonewould be saying things that mite not be true.

Atticus is telling scout that she shouldnt judge people unless she has been what they have been through. I think what Atticus is right and that judging people is bad.I wouldnt want people to judge me. Most people Dont want to be judged so dont judge people if you dont want to be judged. this is a very good moreal to live by today.Scout should listen to Atticus.

Atticus is saying to scout that she should concider what the person has been threw before judging a person. Scout needs to learn to abserve what people have gone threw in there life because everyone comes from a different family and background. This is a good moral to live my life by today. A good theme for this is dont judge a book by its cover because I would not like it if someone judged me without getting to know me first.

Atticus means that scout should get to know what a person has been through or has to do go through every day before judgeing them.

Atticus is telling Scout that basically not to judge a book by it's cover meaning that she shouldnt judge people by the way they look or do things. It affects Scout by making her think about how it would be like in someone elses shoes. I think about how it's not right to judge someone when you don't know them. In my own opinion, I think that Atticus is trying to teach Scout about life. He is trying to show her that you can not judge anyone unless you personally know their situation. By, "climbling into his skin and walking around in it," you will realize that maybe some people aren't what they seem to be. As you get to know people's situations, you will understand what is going on.

I think Atticus is telling Scout that you don't know what people go through unless you walk in their shoes, and your them. It affects Scout becasue she realizes its right, and she understands that she's wrong. I think what he tells Scout is very true because you don't know a person more than they know themselves, and its not right to tease someone or make fun of them. You don't know what they go through at home.

I belive this is a rather important quote. What atticus means by,"climb into his skin and walk around in it" is that you don't know what it is like to be someone unless you experience what is like to be that person(s). For example, say you see a homeless person, you understand they are depressed because they don't have any shelter, but you don't really understand it unless if you experience being homeless. In my opinion, a good life lesson

He is trying to tell scout how to get along with people. To me Atticus was saying that you shouldnt judge a book by its cover and you cant believe everything people say. Atticus was clearly talking about Boo Radley and how everyone speaks and starts rumors about him and automatically assumes that hes a bad person. You cant go around judging someone before you even know them. This helped Scout as she met new people like Dill, when she met him she got to know him alittle better before she decided to judge him. I agree with atticus one-hundred percent you cant judge a person before you get to know them or take life in their point of view.
