Article of the Week #10

week of October 25 -29, 2010

here is the Article of the Week for this week. We are beginning a new unit where we will be reading the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, so I found an article about the author to share with you. I really, REALLY like this novel and hope you will too. This article is a great introduction :) Enjoy.

Remember!!!

A few of you are still typing in your full name, I will NOT post your comment with your full name, which means you are not receiving credit for completing the assignment. I grade them from the published comments. Use your first name, last initial and class period. Look at other comments for examples.

Write your response in a paragraph.

Pay attention when you read! If you don't get it the first time you read it, read it again!! talk to someone about it. Make sure you understand what you read! which means you have to read the WHOLE THING!! don't read part of it, then try to respond, read the WHOLE thing!!

"To Kill a Mockingbird About the Author", is an article found on www.neabigread.org. It is a biography about Harper Lee, the author of "To Kill A Mocking Bird". The article was to inform readers about her life, and the making of the story, like, how she threw almost 5 years of work out of a window. It was a good biography. And it makes me feel a bit more informed on the author now.

The article "To Kill a Mockingbird, About the Author" was found on a website called National Endowment for the Arts. This was a short biography about Nelle Harper Lee. Lee was a tomboy born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. Her small town was much like the one in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". The main character in the story is a lot like herself too. Even though Lee's father wanted her to become a lawyer like himself, she hated law school and left it to become a writer. When she showed a manuscript to an editing company named J.B. Lippincott, it was wasn't what she hoped it would be. Tay Hohoff helped her rewrite it a bit and after two years it was ready to be published. When the final draft of "To Kill a Mockingbird" was published in 1960, it rapidly climed the charts to the bestseller list and stayed there for eighty-eight weeks! In the process however, she nearly gave up! One night when she was rewriting the story, she got frustrated with herself and through all her work out the window! Luckily, her editor talked some sense into her and she went outside to get her rough draft. After it was published, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize! I learned from this to not give up, and I think that Nelle Harper Lee is pretty intersesting.

The “National Endowment for the Arts” web page written by Charles J. Shields, Erika Koss, and David Kipen, about To kill A Mockingbird was to let everyone now about the author, and why she wrote this book. The authors wrote this to all the people who read this book and want to know more about the author. This article was all about her childhood and where she grew up. She grew up living near to Truman Capote, who was famous. They were friends. Truman Capote had a very public life; Harper Lee wanted her life to be private. It also talked about how she almost got rid of her book before it was published! My reaction to this article is that I actually wanted to learn more about the author, and after I read this article now I know a lot more about the author.

The title is 'To Kill a Mockingbird about the Author.' It was online from the Big Read website. The writer must have been one person from the Big read website because it doesn’t say who wrote it. Shows no date but the interview was in 1964. It shows how an author like Harper lee can be a top seller book just by writing books for the fun of it and to see others enjoy it. Instead of others authors who writes books because they have too, to make money out of to become rich. Harper puts parts of her life into the book which makes it interesting but replacing them with other characters but that would react just like the people she is meaning to put in there. The book was a top seller for around eighty weeks and won the Pulitzer Prize. I think it’s crazy for a book to sell that much and for being in the top seller for that amount of time. If I wrote that book I would be set for life and write more books.
